CONTEXT- Instruction for Leaders
Titus 1:5-9
5 The reason I left you in Cretevwas that you might set the deficient areas in proper order and that you might appoint and establish elders in every city, as I ordered you; 6 that is, only those who are unimpeachable, the husband of one wife, having faithful children who are not accused of loose manners and morals or insubordination. 7 For it is absolutely necessary for an overseer to be unimpeachable as God’s steward: not stubborn [uncoachable, selfwilled], not having a revengeful temper, not an excessive drinker, not hard and tyrannical, not greedy of dishonorable gains, 8 but friendly and hospitable, a lover of good things, of a sound mind, just and equitable, faithful in obligations to God [undefiled by sin], self-controlled, 9 holding fast the doctrine of the faithful Word, so that he may be able by sound doctrine both to encourage [the believers] and to reprove those who contradict [the Word].
