CONTEXT- The Charge

1 Timothy 6:3-21a

3 If anyone teaches a diverse doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the doctrine that leads to godliness, 4 he is full of conceit, not really knowing anything. He is sick in the head with questions and disputes [word battles], out of which come envy, discord, blasphemous speech, evil suspicions, 5 constant arguments which stem from men corrupted in their minds
and devoid of the truth. They think godliness is material gain. 6 Godliness [a true, vital, spiritual relationship with God] accompanied with self-adequacy and satisfaction is great gain [spiritually]. 7 We brought nothing into this world, neither can we carry out anything.
8 Hence, we shall be satisfied with food and clothing [and other material needs]. 9 But those who focus their attention on being rich fall into temptations and traps and many passionate desires that are foolish and harmful and which cause men to sink in the sea of ruinous
destruction. 10 All these evils are rooted in the love of money. Those who crave money have erred from the household of faith and have
impaled themselves with many griefs. 11 Now as for you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness and godliness and
believing and the love of God and patience and meekness of disposition. 12 Contend in the good contest of the household of faith. Yes,
latch onto your eternal life [rewards], for which purpose you were called and confessed the good confession before many witnesses. 13 I charge you before God, Who preserves life in all things, and before Christ Jesus, who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 to keep this commandment spotlessly and blamelessly [prepared on all points] until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 This [appearing] will be brought about in God’s own time by God, the blessed and only omnipotent One, the King over those who are kings and the Lord over those who are lords, 16 Who alone is deathless, Who dwells in the state of unapproachable light which no one has seen or is able to see. To Him is honor and power [with impact] forever. Amen. 17 Charge those rich in this present age not to be lofty in their thinking nor to put their trust and hope in untrustworthy riches, but in the living God Who richly provides all things for our enjoyment. 18 Charge them to do good deeds, indeed to be rich in beautiful works, to be generous in giving, to be sharing fully, 19 to be treasuring up for themselves an exceedingly good deposit for the future, that they may latch onto those things which are truly life. 20 O Timothy, guard the spiritual deposit entrusted to you. Avoid profane and empty discussions and antagonistic ideas which are falsely called scientific knowledge. 21a Some who profess this knowledge have swerved and missed the mark—the household of faith.
