by Charles M. Sheldon
(0)Overview - In 1897, Charles M. Sheldon introduced his novel, In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do? It tells the story of what happens to the members of a congregation who accept the challenge to not do anything before first asking themselves, “What would Jesus do?”
Though written well over one hundred years ago, the question is timeless. It provokes the reader to ask himself, what would Jesus do if faced with the set of circumstances that I face today? How would he conduct my business? How would he treat the people that I know? Would he say the things I say? Would he do the things I do?

Meet the Author
Born February 26, 1857 in Wellsville, New York, Charles Monroe Sheldon was educated at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts graduating from the boarding school in 1879. He subsequently earned degrees from Brown University in 1883 and Andover Theological Seminary in 1886, and he was ordained into the Christian ministry that same year. Sheldon took on his first pastorate at the Congregational Church in Waterbury, Vermont. Two years later, Charles accepted an invitation to pastor the Central Congregational Church in Topeka, Kansas where he then began to serve in 1889. Sheldon was influenced by the late nineteenth century school of thought known as Christian Socialism, and over the course of his life, he became regarded as one of the leaders of the Social Gospel movement which applied Christian ethics to social problems. Practicing what he preached in his Social Gospel message, Sheldon, along with members of the Topeka congregation, organized special projects directed toward improving the lives of their indigent fellowmen. They opened the first kindergarten for African-American children west of the Mississippi River; their newly-formed Village Improvement Society helped residents to improve their homes; and through the efforts of his church, jobs were found for many of the unemployed. Charles Sheldon shined a brilliant spotlight on his message of the Christian's responsibility to affect social change with his book, In His Steps:What Would Jesus Do? Over one hundred years later, the book remains hugely popular with Christians of practically every denomination.
